This is the first book of the first series.
It all starts when a young house cat named Rusty has a dream about being in the forest. When he wakes up, he wishes to live his dream. So one day, he heads out into the woods, just to catch a mouse or two. He almost succeeds. Then who comes along? A young warrior apprentice named Graypaw! Rusty and Graypaw have a little fight, then become friends. Graypaw tells Rusty about life in the forest. he tells him about the four warrior Clans; ThunderClan, WindClan, RiverClan and ShadowClan. Rusty is fascinated Then more cats come along. Lionheart and Bluestar, the leader of ThunderClan. They talked and talked until Bluestar invited Rusty to join ThunderClan. Rusty was shocked. So, at sunhigh, Rusty said his good-byes to Smudge, his friend, and left to join ThunderClan.
Once inside the camp, Bluestar held a meeting. Rusty got into a fight with a pale tabby named Longtail, who taunted him for his "kittypet" roots. Rusty nicked Longtail's ear, and Rusty lost his collar. Bluestar changed Rusty's name to Firepaw, in honour of his flame-coloured coat. Soon after the ceremony, an injured cat named Ravenpaw burst into the clearing, saying that the old deputy Redtail was dead. Then Tigerclaw, a huge warrior cat came into the camp with a dead cat in his jaws. that was Redtail. Ravenpaw went to the pretty medicine cat, Spottedleaf, to treat his wounds.
As an apprentice of ThunderClan, he learned how to hunt and fight. One day while on a hunting mission, Firepaw found an old hungry cat named Yellowfang, who was formerly the ShadowClan medicine cat. They fought fiercely after the short battle, he caught prey for the elderly cat, despite the warrior code. They got caught, and he was punished for disobeying the warrior code. Yellowfang was made a prisonner, and Firepaw had to take care of her. Yuck!
Finally, after one moon, Bluestar lets him carry on with his normal apprentice routine. Soon enough, he gets another hunting mission. During his mission, he recognizes Smudge, his kittypet friend. They end up sharing tongues, then by getting caught by Tigerclaw, who reported to bluestar. She did not end up punishing him; she let him, Graypaw and Ravenpaw come to the Gathering!
While there, he sees cats from ShadowClan and RiverClan. But where is WindClan? Turns out that bloodthirsty Brokenstar, Leader of ShadowClan, chased them out of there territory. He also announces that there is a ShadowClan rogue lose in the forest. He must mean Yellowfang! The ThunderClan cats are getting scared. They rush home, but not before Firepaw. He warns Yellowfang of whats happening, but she isn't worried. Bluestar lets her stay in camp.
Bluestar decides to go to the legendary Moonstone, to speak with StarClan. Firepaw, Graypaw, Ravenpaw and Tigerclaw are chosen to accompany her on her journey. He was fascinated by the sight of the Moonstone. On the return journey, they are attacked by rats, and helped by Barley, a loner. Bluestar loses a life anyway.
Back at camp, they are attacked by ShadowClan! Bluestar loses another life, and brave Lionheart dies. Tigerclaw is made deputy in his place. Ravenpaw is terrified. Why? Then Ravenpaw that admits to Firepaw and Graypaw that he witnessed a murder. Tigerclaw murdered Redtail, not Oakheart.
Soon, their Clan is attacked again. Spottedleaf is murdered, Frostfur's kits are stolen and Yellowfang is gone. Yellowfang murdered Spottedleaf and stole the kits! Tigerclaw organizes a fighting patrol to track down Yellowfang and kill her. But wait! She didn't steal the kits! It was Clawface, warrior of ShadowClan.
He needed to warn Yellowfang! On the way, him and Graypaw brought Ravenpaw to Barley's farm, so Tigerclaw wouldn't harm him. Then the two young cats found Yellowfang in ShadowClan territory. She said that she didn't steal the kits, and she was shocked that Spottedleaf was dead. They quickly found the patrol of ThunderClan. Together, they attacked ShadowClan, got the kits back and drove Brokenstar out to live as a rogue. Some ShadowClan elders thanked them for their help.
Back at camp, Firepaw and Graypaw told the Clan that Ravenpaw was dead, and they received their warrior names, Fireheart and Graystripe.
